6 mm Pellets Dies have a range of applications. The 6mm (1/4 inch) Pellet Dies require a relatively small amount of material to make a pellet compared to the larger diameter dies. 6 mm (1/4 inch) pellet dies are also commonly used for making KBr pellets for FTIR analysis, in which small quantities of powders are mixed with Infrared-transparent KBr (Potassium Bromide) powder before pressing into a pellet and transferring into the FTIR.

6 mm die sets require relatively small loads to apply huge stresses so always make sure you stay safe and stay below the max loading force of the pellet die set. Higher compressive stresses to not necessarily make better pellets. With the application of a few tons you can reach 100 000 psi within the die. Whilst dies steels are chosen for tolerating high stresses and pellet dies are heat teated fro superior properties, you can easily exceed even these high yield strengths with a hydraulic press with a few pumps of the handle. The diameter is small enough that pressing force can be applied manually with a lever press or arbor press. Take is easy and make sure students and interns are aware of the same!

Die made of hardened tool steel (Rockwell hardness >C60) for long lasting trouble free performance. Sleeve is polished to high tolerances to allow the hardened tool steel plunger to slide through perfectly. Plunger and spacers are made from high yield strength steel, machined and polished to high tolerance for the perfect fit. Interior surfaces ground to mirror-like finish.

Yield Strength Hardened Steel 80,000 psi (550 MPa)
Recommended max loading @ 50 % 40,000 psi (275 MPa)
Recommended max force 1755 lb (0.88 ton, 7800 N)
Typical force for quality pellets 220-660 lb (0.01-0.3 ton 1-3.2 kN)
Die sleeve inner diameter 6 mm (0.24 inch)
Die sleeve height 40 mm (1.57 inch)
Die sleeve outer diameter 45 mm (1.77 inch)
Assembled height with spacers (w/o powder)* 89 mm (3.5 inch)
Assembled height no spacers (w/o powder)* 73 mm (2.87 inch)

*If making thicker pellets, the die set can operate just the same without spacers.

Safety:

  • Always wear googles and safety protection equipment
  • Clean well after use to prevent rusting.
  • Do not apply pressure beyond shown on table.

D2 Tool Steel. For most pellets this material will be perfect for the job. Hardened D2 tool steel  (Rockwell hardness >C60) for long lasting trouble free performance. The sleeve is polished to high tolerance to allow hardened tool steel plunger to slide through perfectly. Plungers and spacers are made from high yield strength steel, machined and polished to high tolerance for the perfect fit. Interior surfaces are ground to mirror-like finish. Release ring is made of aluminum.

Stainless steel. For a die set with great corrosion resistance and with for those heating for heating their dies up to max 250°C (482°F), this is a great choice. Stainless steel is a more expensive starting material and is slower to machine which leads than a slightly higher costs than our regular die sets. Our stainless die sets are heat treated for high hardness (~58) and have extremely high strength (160, 000 psi).

Recommended max force = Is the maximum force you can put the die set under. This includes a 50% safety margin which is industry standard.

Typical force for quality pellets = This is the range we recommend using that will get you a great pellet and is much less than the recommended max force.
